Since Salamanca is a student town, it is renowned for its lively nightlife. Since streets are closed to vehicles, the pedestrians rule. It is also a place for foreign students to integrate into Spanish university life while meeting Spanish students their own age. The University of Salamanca was one of the first universities in all of Europe. The Plaza Mayor serves as the center of the City where students meet to study the architecture and have a 'cafecito'. Many famous authors and professors such as Miguel de Unamuno as well as painters and philosophers have passed through the doors of the Salamanca University. It is truly a student-oriented city
